Pictorial, or natura, motifs are inspired by nature in the dense Darién rainforest. Bright, colorful birds, detailed bats and butterflies, deep blue and black marlin, and twisty legged octopus are some of the colorful objects combined in brightly colored Wounaan woven art. Some weavers choose to use one motif, such as a single butterfly in multiple color combinations and with a variety of wing decorations, and other masterful weavers combine winding brown branches with tiny green leaves and large colorful flowers- even adding blue/green breasted hummingbirds floating between the flowers.

Pictorial pieces are generally longer-term in construction and vary greatly from artist to artist. Learn more about motif and design.
