Geometric motif baskets get their inspiration from several sources both natural and historical. First, designs are sourced from the intricate body tattoos of the indigenous Wounaan. Body ornamentation is applied using the juice of a native vegetable using a few thin sticks. The tattoos are semi-permanent, lasting only a few weeks, and reapplied for ceremonies and celebrations. Second, the designs are often referred to as 'cultural' because they also draw their inspiration from pre-colombian textiles and wall-art. The Wounaan villages border Colombia and share some historical migration patterns.
